Tim O’Reilly has suggested that blogs be rated for adult content and language. He also suggests that people should not be allowed to leave anonymous posts on blogs.
I would love to agree with him. However, is it possible to prove that the signer of a post is actually the signer of the post? Who would enforce it if the signer isn’t the signer and has left a threat?
I do think the bloggers themselves (of which I am one, now that I think about it) should have established standards. Those who live by them deserve consideration and respect; those who don’t can take their places as virtual tabloids. I have written here before that threats are criminal behavior, not even close to freedome of speech. When virtual tabloids turn into vehicles for illegal libel or slander, the writers of objectional copy must be caught – if we can.
