I live in an area proud of its writers, and justly so: Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Louisa Mae Alcott…the Transcendentalist roll call – and that is only the beginning.
I was reviewing my delicio.us material for a course I am teaching soon, and came across my bookmark for the New England Writers’ Centre, much more than a day’s carriage ride from Concord. The New England Writers’ Centre, for people who love writing and reading, is in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. Now my New England, United States, and New England NSW must be connected, in my view, by six degrees of separation.
Now I think my next internet project should be to trace an internet path from my backyard to theirs. As Charles Dickens wrote in Great Expectations, we should think about how our lives would be different if it weren’t for that one link in the chain formed on one memorable day.
